This course is designed to introduce students to human anatomy and physiology. Anatomy is the branch of science that studies body structure. Physiology is the branch of science that studies how body parts and systems function. Students will study units organized by human body systems in a flexible format that includes traditional lecture, case studies, labs, dissections, and online resources. It is designed for students interested in attending college and pursuing a science or health related career, although college and/or career plans are not required to take this course. Body system units of study include: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, nervous, endocrine, reproductive, urinary, digestive, and immune. Active participation in labs, organ dissections, and case studies is required.

This course provides students with a foundation in medical language and terminology essential for success in health science careers. Students will study the principles of medical word building to develop a strong and practical medical vocabulary used across health care settings. Through the exploration of prefixes, suffixes, root words, plurals, abbreviations, and symbols, students will learn to accurately define, spell, and pronounce medical terms. Emphasis is placed on understanding terminology related to surgical and diagnostic procedures, as well as medical specialties. The course includes study of terminology for the following body systems: digestive, urinary, reproductive (male and female), nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, blood, lymphatic and immune, and musculoskeletal.

This course supports career readiness by integrating National Health Science and Minnesota CTE standards, preparing students for further study or entry-level opportunities in health care pathways such as nursing, medical assisting, and other allied health professions. This course introduces concepts of basic human needs and the function of the nursing assistant. Basic nursing content and skills will be taught in the classroom and lab setting. This course is centered on caring for residents in long-term care facilities. It meets the objectives of the Federal, State, and Statutory requirements for nursing assistant training. Upon successful completion of the class, the student will be eligible to take the Nursing Assistant Competency Exam, which is required for placement on the Minnesota Department of Health's Nursing Assistant Registry.

CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT COURSE

This 9-credit Concurrent Enrollment Emergency Medical Technician certificate program provides a basic education in emergency medical care. Students will acquire the competencies needed to prepare for the national certification examination and a career as an emergency medical technician (EMT). Students will learn how to be responsible for delivering emergency care to critically sick or injured people and develop the skills to use and maintain all basic emergency equipment. Topics covered include patient assessment, trauma skills, and care and recognition of heart disease and respiratory problems. This program will give students clinical experience in the field. Students need to obtain EMT certification to enroll in any paramedic course at the college. The EMT program is approved by Minnesota’s Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board (EMSRB). When students successfully complete the certificate program, they will be eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) written and practical exams to become certified nationally and in the state of Minnesota. This course is ideally suited for students who have successfully completed the EMR course. It solidifies a professional, high-demand career pathway and grants students a higher level of entry into healthcare or public safety fields immediately upon graduation. This course is not eligible to be taken Pass/No Credit.

This course is designed as a more advanced extension of the Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology elective course at FHS. Students will learn in a flexible format somewhat similar to the introduction course through a mix of traditional lectures, case studies, labs, dissections, and online resources. A stronger focus with be put on studying human physiology and pathophysiology (the study of diseases) through case study analyses. Like the introductory course, it is designed for students interested in attending college and pursuing a science or health related careers, but college and/or career plans are not required to take this course. Active participation in labs, organ dissections, and case studies is required. Students must also be comfortable acting as patients for their classmates during lab and case study scenarios (letting a classmate take their blood pressure and pulse, for example).

This course provides students with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to respond confidently and effectively in emergency situations. Students will learn how to recognize and provide care for a variety of injuries and sudden illnesses, as well as how to perform life-saving procedures such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Emphasis is placed on personal safety, quick decision-making, and proper emergency response techniques. Upon successful completion, students will be prepared to take certification assessments in First Aid and CPR.

Students will demonstrate the ability to assess emergency situations, provide immediate and appropriate care, and perform CPR and first aid procedures in accordance with current national guidelines. The training meets current American Red Cross (or American Heart Association) standards and prepares participants to act confidently in emergency situations at home, work, or in the community.

Mind and Body will help students discover the benefits of practicing mindfulness, stress reduction techniques, yoga, meditation, character building and effective communication skills. Students will have the opportunity to practice strategies to increase self-esteem, focus on goal setting, leadership training, learn about the valuable nutrients that can improve mood, energy and focus, as well as participate in many other activities to help promote overall health and wellness. The Mind and Body Connection class will build on skills that promote healthy behaviors and recognize unhealthy choices that can damage a person’s mind and body. This class is designed to help you learn how to manage stress, increase your self-esteem, experience healthy relationships, and feel energized and resilient.

Have you ever wanted to learn more about being a veterinarian? Here is your chance!! During this introductory class, you will be exposed to topics like terminology, anatomy and common animal  diseases.  Hands-on activities  that  you  will experience include basic animal restraints, first-aid care, suturing and checking for parasites. We will be using animal models to learn procedures as well as occasional live-animal guests. In addition, students will complete a career project as part of the class.

Advanced Placement (AP) Biology is open to FHS sophomores as an alternative course for General Biology. Students will explore biology concepts through investigations on the topics of Chemistry of Life, Cells, Cellular Energetics, Cell Communication and Cell Cycle, Heredity, Gene Expression and Regulation, Natural Selection, and Ecology. AP Biology is a college-level biology course equivalent to a two-semester introductory biology course for biology majors. The AP program enables willing and academically prepared students to pursue college-level studies with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both, while still in high school. This course prepares students to take the AP Biology exam in the spring (Tri 3). Students are expected to complete approximately 3-5 hours of additional work outside the classroom per week.

Zoology is the study of animals. In this one-trimester course we will study the major groups (phyla) within the animal kingdom. The grade for this course is heavily based on dissection of preserved specimens (about 1 dissection per week). Dissections are not optional; they are a required part of this course. Depending on class size, students may be divided so only one half of the class is in the lab each day - the other half will work outside of the classroom after attendance has been taken IF students are caught up on previous work. On non-dissection days we will study the features and anatomy which make each phylum unique. Students will be quizzed on the terminology and features covered. Phyla covered include: Porifera, Cnidaria, Nematoda, Platyhelminthes, Annelida, Echinodermata, Mollusca, Arthropoda, and Chordata.

The purpose of this introductory psychology course is to expose students to the systematic and scientific study of behavior and mental processes of human beings and animals. This is a yearlong course. Students must sign up for Trimesters A, B and C. This course introduces students to the systematic and scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Students will increase their understanding of psychology, its methods, theory and research. AP psychology is a survey course. Students will gain a broad understanding about the principal approaches to psychology: behavior, biological, cognitive humanistic, and psychodynamic. AP psychology will be taught at the college level and student study habits and participation should reflect this fact. All vocabulary, information and activities will be intended to prepare you for the AP exam. Students need to possess strong reading, writing, and analytical skills for success in this course. Students will be expected to take the AP exam at the end of the course. Students are expected to complete approximately 5-8 hours of additional work outside the classroom per week.

This class is designed for students who struggled in Algebra II. It is beneficial for the college bound student whose career plans may not involve course work in the math or science fields. Students will learn statistical models and probability laws; and use them to calculate the probability of real events taking place.

Math 200 Introduction to Statistics/AP Statistics is a year-long course introducing students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Students will observe patterns and departures from patterns, decide what and how to measure, produce models using probability and simulation, and confirm models. Appropriate technology, from manipulative to calculators and application software, will be used regularly for instruction and assessment. Students will concurrently enroll with SMSU “College Now” program and also have the option to take the AP Exam at the end of the year. This course is not eligible to be taken Pass/No Credit for FHS or SMSU.

If so, then “Be Your Own Tech Support” is perfect for you! This class intended for any student, even if you don’t know a thing about how computers actually work (that’s what this class is for!). You will learn about the basic parts of a computer, what makes Windows®, Apple®, and Chromebooks® different, and fix many of the problems that a typical computer owner would consider “unfixable.” After completing this course, you will know a lot more about what your computer actually is, and how to take care of it to keep it running like it did on the first day you bought it.
