Highlights at FHS (December 2020)

Catch up with what is happening at Farmington High School by checking out Highlights, the new monthly (or so) publication recapping some of the great things going on.  With Farmington High School having over 2,000 students, we have things to celebrate almost every day.  Here is what has been happening so far in 2020:

The A-topic this Fall was our hybrid and distance learning.  Our teachers were challenged to support cohort 1, cohort 2, and distance learners all in the same class, during the school day.  Not only that, but they have also put an extra effort into making sure that our students, while at home, feel connected to the school, their classmates, and their teachers.  This was MUCH better than in the Spring,  We call is, distance learning 2.0.  Please take a moment to watch this video with a couple of examples from FHS:  https://youtu.be/UaK8yqaRd3A

Unfortunately due to many reasons, we were not able to have an appropriate homecoming week this year.  However, our student council did not give up on a celebration when we needed it most.  They created activities, dress up days, and fun things to do on Halloweek.  This even included a socially distanced spooky movie on the FHS turf.

Like last year, our National Honors Society has continued to give back by offering their tutoring services to any of their fellow students in need.  Pretty simple, students or families just fill out a google form and a tutor connects with them and sets up a time either in person or virtually.

Our Robotics team has always been very philanthropic and works hard to stay connected with the community.  This year has been no different.    The robotics team has been making mask “ear savers” using their 3D printer and donating them to hospitals and nursing homes.  They had made and donated over 300 of them as of October.

Last month, we announced FHS is partnering with Every Meal to provide students with FREE food to take home. There are 5 different types of bags available, each providing a balanced meal, with different types of food. Starting TUESDAY NOVEMBER 17 FHS students were able to grab food from the tables to bring home.

2021 Seniors

Obviously this has not been the senior year the class of 2021 was hoping for, we have been doing our best to make it special for our students and their families.  Couple of senior only things happening so far this year…

ACT Test: Last year, as juniors, the class of 2021 was supposed to take the ACT test, but due to COVID, they were unable to.  Although there are still many COVID restrictions, we were able to come up with  a plan to still give them that opportunity this Fall.  In October all seniors were given the opportunity to take the ACT test at Farmington High School.

Senior Panoramic Picture: Although it wasn’t like it has always been.  With some creative editing, we were able to take our annual senior panoramic picture.  Normally we do this on Homecoming week, but since there was no Homecoming this year we utilized the spirit days associated with the Student Council Sponsored Halloweek.

Modified Open Campus: Our students have been advocating for an open campus for many years.  Given this year's circumstances and creative scheduling, we were able to make it happen for our seniors.  In September we instituted a modified open campus during lunches so our seniors were able to leave campus.  It went very well and we plan to continue and expand it once we are able to return to school more full time.

I know that there have been so many more highlights at FHS so far in 2020, which is why we have decided to post an update each month.  Thank you for your support and trust in Farmington High School!
