Farmington High School Senior and AP Art student Travis Appel took second place in the 2nd District Congressional Art Contest sponsored by Congressman John Kline. Appel’s piece, entitled “Minnesota County Map Typography,” is a work of graphic design that expresses his pride in being a Minnesotan. It is a map of the entire state of Minnesota, showing all the counties in the state to scale. The county names take up the same area as the counties themselves on the map. Congressman Kline presented Appel with an award for his art on the afternoon of May 5. His artwork will hang in the Congressman’s office in Washington D.C. for the next year.

Since 1982, each Member of the U.S. House of Representatives has conducted an “Artistic Discovery” competition to provide high school students the chance to share their artistic ability. The annual competition includes paintings, drawings, collages, prints, photography, computer generated art, and mixed media presentations. For more information about the 2nd District Congressional Art Contest visit http://kline.house.gov/constituent-services/art-competition.htm.
